    • Dear Hijo de la Luna,

Nobel laureate Martin Luther King, Jr. nominated Thich Nhat Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. In his nomination Dr. King said, “I do not personally know of anyone more worthy of [this prize] than this gentle monk from Vietnam. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity”. The fact that King had revealed the candidate he had chosen to nominate and had made a “strong request” to the prize committee, was in sharp violation of the Nobel traditions and protocol. The committee did not make an award that year. Thich Nhat Hanh was awarded the Courage of Conscience award in 1991.

      Hope this answers your question.

  1. Dear Samaneri Vimala,
Thank you for your reply. This kind of answers my question in a negative way, in so far as it indicates that Ven Thich Nhat Hanh was never awarded the Nobel Prize.
I did know that he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but then so are on average 200 hundred people a year. In other words being nominated does not mean you’ll be awarded the prize. It only means you have a small probability of receiving it.
Concerning the reason why he was not awarded the prize, if I understand correctly are you saying that it is due to essentially to a question of form: i.e, to the fact that King made a ‘strong request’ in his letter to the committee? In the version of the letter I have read King just writes ‘I respectfully recommend to you that you invest his cause with the acknowledged grandeur of the Nobel Peace Prize of 1967.’ Which is what I would expect one to write when nominating a candidate.
Should you have a formal reference showing that the reason why Ven Thich Nhat Hanh never got the Nobel Prize in 1967 is a violation of protocol, I should be most interested in reading it.
